SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- There will be a new fan at Shepherd University football games when the season starts in the fall.
The University has a new mascot, a dorset ram named J.C. Named for President Mary J.C. Hendrix's middle initials, the ram was purchased with donations from Shepherd alumni Al and Sarah Lueck; Holly Morgan Frye, assistant vice president for student affairs and director of community and congressional relations, and her husband, Jim Frye; and Dr. Ben Martz, dean of the College of Business. J.C. will attend Shepherd football games and a variety of other events on campus.

FALLING WATERS, WV- The Virginia Chargers scored 21 unanswered points to capture their second consecutive Atlantic Football Association Southern Conference Championship in semi pro football last Saturday at Spring Mills High School.
The Chargers went down early, to the Virginia Storm, as the Storm connected on the second play from scrimmage for a long touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Chargers drove down and got on the board with a Alhaji Kanu field goal, but a penalty kept the drive alive and the Chargers took the three points off the board and were held on a goal line drive. It appeared the Chargers scored when AFA leading rusher Michael "Moo" Roberts stretched the ball out, but did not get the call.
"I know I scored, I stretched the ball over." Roberts said.

After a couple of exchanges the Storm hit another long pass on a broken play and went up 14-0.
Momentum changed when the Storm where driving and pressure from Earl Babcock, A.J. Orlebar and Seth Rocca forced an errant throw that was picked off by Charger defensive back Tavan Mair.
Roberts scored from one yard out to pull the Chargers within seven shortly before the first half.
The Chargers got two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Dominique Terrell in the second half to give the Chargers the Championship.
The win revenged the Chargers earlier season 14-0 loss to the Storm in Danville. The loss was the Chargers only loss so far this season.
"We went down early and made a couple mistakes," Sherman Thomas said, "We just got back to being a family. We started out slow last week and came back."

Thomas had back to back stops on a late drive by the Storm that would have tied the game up, he broke up a pass and then on the next play stopped a reciever short of a first down forcing a turnover on downs and giving the ball to the Chargers with less than three minutes to play.
Thomas also gained close to 100 yards on kickoff returns helping to set the team up with good field position.
Terrell was able to pick up a first down rushing and the Chargers were able to run out the clock.
The win places the Chargers in their third consecutive AFA Bowl. They will face their biggest rival the Maryland Phantoms in Baltimore (7:00PM).

The Chargers defeated the New River Nitro last year and lost to the Harrisonburg Sharks in 2015.
The Phantoms won the AFA Bowl in 2014, and the Chargers have won in 2011, 2013, and 2016.

ASHBURN, Va.- The Washington Redskins veteran defensive back DeAngelo Hall is preparing to enter his14th season in the NFL. Hall attended all the Redskins OTA sessions and mandatory mini camp but watched on the sidelines as he works himself back from last seasons torn ACL injury that occured in week 3 against the New York Giants. The injury ended Hall's season. Hall has made the switch from cornerback to safety and is a versatile player in the secondary.
Hall still feels like he can contribute to the team and is a valuable leader in the locker room to a group of new players wanting to learn from the 4 time pro bowler. Hall was also the Redskins captain in 2010, 2011, and 2014.
The 33 year old native of Chesapeake, VA and VA Tech Hokie graduate enters his 10th season as a Redskins after being drafted and spending his first 4 years in the league as an Atlanta Falcon. Hall played 8 games for the Oakland Raiders in 2008 before coming to Washington.

Hall recorded 190 tackles, 20 passes defensed, eight interceptions, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and seven receptions for 86 yards with one touchdown in his three-year career at Virginia Tech. He returned 56 punts for 839 yards and five touchdowns. His 839 yards rank third on the Big East Conference career-record chart while his five returns for touchdowns rank second in conference history. Hall is one of the few players in college football history to score touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams during their collegiate career.

ASHBURN, Va.-The month of June was a busy one at Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park. Rookie mini camp, OTA's, and the mandatory mini camp have now all been put into the books. The next phase will be summer training camp in Richmond that starts on July 27. (Redskins 2017 Training Camp Schedule).
"I feel like it was a good offseason program, I was happy about it, so we ended it today," Coach Jay Gruden said. "The number one goal, in my opinion, is for them to get stronger, work on their running and weightlifting and all of that stuff. I think they accomplished that, they got stronger. After practice we have a meeting at 2:00 and then they’ll be on their way until training camp starts.They’re professional football players, their job is to keep their bodies in shape. They have to hit training camp with a full tank of gas. They can’t come in here and expect to get in shape in training camp. They have to be in shape when they arrive.
The arrival of TE Jordan Reed and OL Trent Williams was a welcome sight for fans, players and coaches. Reed and Williams were both absent from the voluntary OTA's but obviously had been training on their own as they both looked to be in good shape, and were impressive to coaches in the Mini Camp session. Matt Jones who earlier left Redskins park returned for the mini camp and worked hard as well.

Former Redskins Superbowl quarterback Doug Williams was promoted to Senior VP of Player Personnel on Tuesday and spoke with the team at mid field at the end of Tuesday's practice. (Doug Williams Promotion Press Release).
The team should have one of the most competitive training camps in recent years, with a multitude of talent competing for various roster spots.
Tight end, linebacker, defensive backfield, and offensive line are among the positions that will be the most competitive.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have promoted Doug Williams to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel.

Williams is a veteran of 20 NFL seasons, including nine as a
player and 11 in scouting/personnel roles. Prior to joining the
Redskins’ personnel department in 2014, Williams spent five seasons as
Personnel Executive
with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004-08 before being named the
team’s Director of Pro Personnel for the 2009 season.
A member of the 80 Greatest Redskins and a Redskins Ring of Famer,
Williams played with the Redskins from 1986-89 and led Washington to a
Super Bowl XXII title, a 42-10 rout of the Denver Broncos. Williams, the
first
African-American quarterback to play in a Super Bowl, completed
18-of-29 passes for 340 yards with four touchdown passes to earn Super
Bowl XXII MVP honors.

Williams, a first-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 1978 NFL Draft
(No. 17 overall), led the Buccaneers to the first three playoff
appearances in team history. In 1986, the Redskins traded for Williams’
rights following
two seasons with the USFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws. In Williams’ Super Bowl
XXII MVP performance following the 1987 season, he set or tied several
Super Bowl passing records, including most TD passes (four), most yards
passing (340), longest pass completion (80
yards) and longest TD pass (80 yards).
Williams joined the Buccaneers’ front office in 2004 following a
successful tenure as head coach at his alma mater, Grambling State
University, and one of the most storied playing careers in league and
team history.
His responsibilities in Tampa included coordinating the scouting and
recruiting of all NFL players, while also monitoring NFL transactions
and overseeing player tryouts. In addition, he was in charge of Tampa
Bay’s evaluating efforts of all other professional
football leagues, including the Canadian Football League.
In six seasons during his first tenure (1998-2003) at Grambling
State, Williams brought one of the most storied programs in college
football history back to prominence, compiling a 52-18 record as head
coach after succeeding
the legendary Eddie Robinson, who was at the helm for 57 years from
1941-97 and re-wrote the record books as the winningest coach in the
history of college football with 408 career wins.

BLUEMONT, Va.- Clarke County Eagle senior Bryan Wallace is making a major impact on college coaches and scouts. Clarke County Football coach Chris Parker verified that Wallace attended Brad Lambert's Elite Prospect Football camp this past weekend at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. Soon after the camp, a recruiting coordinator from the UNCC 49ers contacted Clarke Athletic Director Casey Childs to indicate the school was interested in offering Wallace a football scholarship.
The 49ers play in the FBS Conference USA and have such teams as Kansas State, Marshall, Florida Atlantic, and Eastern Michigan on this years schedule.
Two nearby players from Stone Bridge, (Ashburn) are on the roster. Redshirt junior offensive lineman Nate Davis, and redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Thompson, son of the Bulldogs head coach Mickey Thompson.

Childs also verified that he was contacted today by the University of Tennessee associate head football coach Brady Hoke (Defensive line) expressing interest in Wallace and inviting him to the Tennessee Elite High School camp this weekend in Knoxville.
"The University of Tennessee staff were present at the UNCC camp and invited Bryan down this weekend."Parker said, "The future is bright for this young man."
Among the many honors for Wallace are the Winchester Star's Male Athlete of the Year in 2015, Bull Run District Defensive Player of the Year, VHSL 2A First team DL 2016, VHSCA 2A First Team DL 2015, 2016 to name a few.
Wallace is also a 3 time VHSL State Wrestling Champion and placed in last years elite Beast of the East Tournament.

WINCHESTER, Va.- Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Doug Zipp announced Tuesday that the process of replacing the artificial turf on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium begins today.
ASHBURN, Va.- The Washington Redskins completed their final OTA on Wednesday at Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park. Trent Williams, Jordan Reed did not attend but are expected for next weeks mandatory mini-camp. The status of Matt Jones is not known at this time, Jones left Redskins Park earlier this season and was not present at todays OTA. Offensive Coordinator Matt Cavanaugh was asked about the status of Jones returning to next weeks mini camp at his post practice press conference.
“I don’t know, to be honest with you, Cavanaugh said. "I wasn’t privy to him leaving the building and I’m not privy to if he’s deciding to come back or not. I think management can best answer that.”

Defensive back Josh Norman was the last player to walk off after remaining 15 minutes with backup qb Nate Sudfield working on scoring a goal with a soccer ball.
"I'm just doing what I need to do to get my cardio work in." Norman said.

Offensive lineman Morgan Moses has been one of many veteran Redskins that have taken on a leadership role among the many new Redskins that have reported this year. Head coach Jay Gruden has been very impressed with the play and work ethic of the former Virginia Cavalier.
"His growth with Coach [Bill] Callahan has been out of this world. He is one of the top right tackles, I think, in the league, quite honestly. He plays with great length. He’s very knowledgeable for the game. He works extremely hard on and off the field. He’s a great leader for the rest of the guys."Gruden said.
