Heritage's Reed Prosser named Washington Redskins High School Coach of the Week

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Reed Prosser of Heritage High School in Leesburg, Va. has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of Oct. 19.

Prosser has been coaching football for 19 years and is in his third season with Heritage High School. The Pride are currently 6 – 1 this season. This is not Prosser’s first coaching distinction, as he was named Hagerstown WHHG Coach of the Year in 2007 and the Northwest District and Winchester Star Coach of the Year in 2010.

In addition to coaching football, Prosser is also a full-time English teacher at Heritage High School. When asked how Coach Prosser motivates his student-athletes, Athletic Director Ron Petrella said that Prosser takes a team first approach to coaching and makes sure that all students get recognition for their role on the team.

“Coach Prosser truly understands that we are raising student-athletes,” Petrella said.

Each spring, Coach Prosser runs an introduction to high school athletics seminar for Cedar Middle School, which hosts 40 – 50 students. Coach Prosser brings other coaches and players from Heritage High School and talks to the middle school boys who are getting ready to transition into high school and are interested in playing football. In the seminar he discusses getting paperwork in on time, expectations of a high school football player and the importance of academics. The goal is to help prepare the students while also making them feel comfortable about the transition into high school.

Coach Prosser is a certified Heads Up Football instructor through USA Football and partners with youth leagues to teach coaches best practices for player safety.

Redskins High School Coach of the Week

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Each week during the 2015 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden, Redskins President Bruce Allen and General Manager Scot McCloughan.

For more information on the Redskins High School Coach of the Week program or the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, visit http://www.redskins.com/community or follow the Foundation on Twitter at @RedskinsCR or on Instagram @redskinsgiveback.

Heritage opens strong with win against James Wood

Alex Carlin throws 5 TD's  Photo by James Murphy/CCS
LEESBURG, Va.- The Heritage Pride wasted no time Friday night coming out of  the gates on the first play from scrimmage with a touchdown agaisnt James Wood.

Heritage quarterback Alex Carlin threw five touchdown passes and ran for one in a 55-21 victory on the Clarke County Sports Game of the Week.

"I was real excited how we played offensively," Heritage Coach Reed said, "the kids did a good job playing hard, executing, we knew we were going to be exposive on offense and just really proud of the effort the kids gave tonight."

The Pride managed to get 15 points on the board before the Colonels offense touched the ball.

After the opening kickoff Carlin hit Cole Miller in stride for a 76 yard touchdown pass and after the kick failed, the Pride recovered an onside kick and got their second score of the first quarter on a 44 yard scamper from Mitch Westbrook and the point after gave Heritage a 15 point lead just over one minute into the game.

"We gave up a lot of trick type plays, onside kicks and those things early. The thing we learned is that we can run the ball," James Wood Coach McHale said. "We've got to figure out our defense and adjust that and I think we will be alright."

Tyler Bishop rushed for 288 yards and 2 td's   James Murphy/CCS
Colonel running back Tyler Bishop rushed for 288 yards and two touchdowns for the Colonels before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. Bishop scored on runs of 8 and 85 yards.

Carlin used a variety of weapons speading his five touchdowns among four receivers. Carlin hit Cole Miller on passes of 76 and 20, Andrew Sylvain for 15, Tyrique Moss for 85, and Mitch Westbrook for 85 yards.

"We like to spread the wealth around here at Heritage," Carlin said. "We like to get everybody in the mix and feeling better, everyone's a part of the team."

Westbook scored two times on the the ground with runs of 44 and 5. Carlin scored the Pride's only touchdown of the second half on a 30 yard run.

James Wood's other score came on a one yard plunge from running back Keegan DeHaven.

Strong competition rules Loudoun Valley Duals

by Michael "Moe" Murphy

Five Loudoun schools competed in the Loudoun Valley Duals Wrestling Tournament Jan. 18-19 in Purcellville. Broad Run, Freedom, Heritage, Loudoun Valley and Potomac Falls participated in a 13-team field that included squads from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

“Every year we’ve just tried to keep on improving the tournament itself,” said Loudoun Valley coach Troy Mezzatesta before rattling off several of the top teams in this year’s event. “Just some good quality teams that up the competition and let your wrestlers know where they are.”

Westfield, considered one of the top Virginia AAA teams, won all nine of its matches in the two-day tournament to earn top team honors. Stafford (7-2) and Pennsylvania school North Lebanon (7-3) produced solid records as well.

Freedom delivered the best showing among Loudoun schools. The Eagles went 5-2 with victories over Hedgesville (W. Va.), Potomac Falls, Liberty, Washington (W. Va.) and Sherando.

“We were coming in with a record in dual meets of 25-5,” Freedom coach Kent Nagy said. “We’ve battled injuries and we only have two kids returning from last year’s starting 14, so we are winning with a whole fresh batch of kids.

“We talk about the no names,” Nagy continued. “We have a lot of no name kids out there that nobody really knows to this point and we are hoping at the end of the year they will. They’ve worked really hard and they waited their chance and now they are getting it.”

Freedom is led by Brendan Kammerdeiner at 195 pounds and Jason Cardoza at 170. The two captains have worked hard to lead the team not just during wrestling season, but year-round.

“Brendan Kammerdeiner was fifth in the region last year and won the district,” Nagy said. “He is probably in the top five in the state this year. Our other captain Jason Cardoza is pushing 40 wins this year. Not a whole lot of flash but he grinds matches out. A real tough kid and a great leader. Andy Hinricks at 145 and Jack Wrenn at 160 are two juniors who also have solid experience and have wrestled year-round since entering high school.”
