Local coaches honored by the Washington Redskins

BLUEMONT, Va.- The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation prepares to head into their 15th season of rewarding local football coaches and the programs they coach with The Washington Redskins High School Coach of the Week program.

Charlie Pierce won in 2001 and 2010  Moe Murphy/CCS
In addition to the prestigious honor among their peers, the coaches receive 1,000 dollars to spend on their program.

"The program was started in 2001 by the Redskins Foundation in cooperation with the NFL Foundation and was established to recognize high school football coaches throughout the DC Metro area and their efforts both on and off the field in creating a better, safer game for their athletes." Ross Taylor, Director of Communications for the Washington Redskins said.

Several local coaches have been reciepients of the award over the years and they all spoke of being honored by the award and how it has helped in their programs.

Charlie Pierce, Coach at Briar Woods was the first recipient of the award in 2001 while at Park View. Pierce won the award a second time in 2010 at Briar Woods.

"I have these awards framed and in my office. I see them everyday," Pierce said. "I get a great sense of pride out of having done this at two different schools. In both cases the money was spent towards new uniforms for our teams."

Mickey Thompson won in 2006, 2012 Moe Murphy/CCS
Another long time area coach, Mickey Thompson of Stone Bridge is a two time winner, receiving the award in 2006, and 2012.

"The award helps promote high school football. I personally appreciate the recognition and also it's nice to have your program recognized for having a good year," Thompson said. "Any time the highest level in your sport gives you an award its special. In 2006 we used the money on gloves for the team, in 2012 it went towards our State Playoff dinner."

Heritage assistant and long time head coach Wes Driskill won the award in 2008. The money was used to purchase homecoming jersey's for the JV and Varsity squads.

"My staff, administration, players and I were very honored and grateful to receive this award," Driskill said. "Over the years the Redskins have been awesome about recognizing and helping football programs in Loudoun."

Chris Parker won in 2009   Moe Murphy/CCS

Clarke County Coach Chris Parker was a winner in in 2009.

"I was honored and very humbled to get that award, " Parker said. "The fact that I am a Redskin fan meant the world to me. We were able to use the money to purchase new practice jerseys that at the time were greatly needed."

Rock Ridge first year varsity coach Tony Tallent won the award in 2013 while coaching the Warren County Wildcats.

"Right now it's the only certificate I have hanging in my new office," Tallent said. "I was impressed that the Redskins focused on more than state championships. They focused on programs that wanted to develop young men to be great leaders. They recognize success both on and off the field."

Bruce Sheppard, the current assistant AD at Woodgrove High School won the award in 2005 while the head coach at neighboring Loudoun Valley.

"In football there is no recognition that is earned without the contributions of many," Sheppard said. "2005 was the year that Loudoun Valley moved up to AAA, and thankfully we did so with an outstanding group of character players. We shared the recognition by the Redskins organization with the entire program. We ultimately used the funds to assist in the purchase of a new sled for our offensive lineman."

The list of area coaches to have won the award is impressive and include the following coaches.

Coach Charlie Pierce 2001 Park View, 2010 Briar Woods , Mickey Thompson Stone Bridge 2006, 2012 , Coach Bruce Sheppard Loudoun Valley 2005, Coach Andy Hill Park View 2007, Coach Bill Hall Sherando 2007, Coach Michael Burnett Broad Run 2008, along with Coach of the Year 2008, Coach Tony Rayburn John Handley 2008, Coach  Wes Driskill Heritage 2008, Coach Chris Parker Clarke County 2009, Coach Todd Hill Loudoun County 2009, Coach Mike Skinner Woodgrove 2013, Coach Tony Tallent Warren County 2013.  A complete listed is provided at the end of this article.
