Redskin veterans speak as Mini Camp comes to a close

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va.- The Washington Redskins wound up their 2018 mini camp today, practicing inside the bubble, giving the Redskins ground crew a chance to work on the outdoor fields.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va.- The Washington Redskins continued their O.T.A.'s  (organized team activity) today at the Inova Sports Performance and Training Center in Ashburn, VA.

ASHBURN, VA- The Washington Redskins completed an OTA that was open to the media last Wednesday May 30 and was also Military Appreciation Day. The team will have another OTA next week before opening veteran mini camp the second week of June.

Eagles coral Mustangs to finish regular season

BERRYVILLE, Va.- The Clarke County Eagles finished strong defeating the George Mason Mustangs 42-7 on Senior Night at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium.

"I'm very proud of this team, and certainly proud of our seniors," Eagles coach Chris Parker said. "They've been a part of a lot of big wins, and I'm really happy for them and proud of this team to be 9-1 this season."

Clarke County (9-1, 3-1) completed their regular season a week ahead of most teams as they have their bye week this coming Friday, the last regular week of the VHSL season.

The Eagles currently sit at number one in the AA Region B power points just slightly ahead of the Central Falcons, the team that defeated the Eagles. The team will have to wait and see how other teams do this week but will surely finish first or second in the final rankings that are used for playoff seating. The Eagles will definitely host a first round playoff game at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium in two weeks.

Sophomore quarterback Colby Childs passed for 3 touchdowns going a perfect 6 for 6 for 165 yards. Childs also put the Eagles on the board with a touchdown run in the first quarter.

Peyton Rutherford finished his amazing  first regular season with 106 yards rushing on 9 carries and scored 3 times. Once on the ground and two on the receiving end of Child's passes. His second touchdown was a spectacular catch as he reached over the Mason defender and plucked the ball while running backwards and then went on to break away and score.

"I really just tried to focus on the ball and catch it," Rutherford said. "I didn't really see the defender until I got there and caught it, and once I caught it I was like, I got to score."

George Mason (5-4, 0-3) was able to get a score late in the fourth quarter on a 3 yard touchdown run by West Hagler. The Eagles defense controlled the line and was able to contain the Mason passing game.

The Eagles were led by defensive lineman Bryan Wallace who led the team with 116 tackles, (47 solo) and 12 sacks. The senior commit to UNC Charlotte was rewarded for his great season with a chance to move to the running back position with his first career carry in the fourth quarter.

"It was my first career run and I can't even tell you what happened," Wallace jokingly said. "I was running and it felt like I was in a spaceship white stars flying by me. It was crazy."

Kyle Baylor continued his streak of big plays as he scored twice on a 58 yard touchdown reception and a 73 yard run. Both plays saw Baylor shirking several defenders as he changed direction multiple times.

Senior lineman Kyle Anderson was selected the Sixth Annual Malloy Ford Unsung Hero. The award is presented at the end of every last regular season home game and exemplifies the spirit of hard work, and accomplishment.

"It's pretty awesome, I worked hard during the offseason, I work hard in the games during the season," Anderson said. "It's also a team aspect at the same time. I couldn't be here without my boys, they couldn't be here without me. We are a team, we play together, and we win together."

The Clarke County Sports Locker Room Show 10 29 17

LANDOVER, Md.- The Washington Redskins battled the elements, and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at FedEx Field. The Cowboys came out on top 33-19. Redskin players Vernon Davis, Chris Thompson, and Josh Norman spoke to the media in the locker room after the game.  (Check back for more game coverage and photography).

Eagles win big at Madison

MADISON, Va.- The Clarke County Eagles had all phases of the game working as they toppled the Madison County Mountaineers 61-10, spoiling former Eagle great Chandler Rhoads first time coaching against his former school.

Kyle Baylor had a phenominal night, with 3 interceptions, 3 touchdown receptions and a kickoff return for a fourth score.

"My coaches always preach take your read steps against the past," Baylor said. "I just did what I was told and I executed it the way we practice every day and it just turned out well."

Clarke (8-1, 2-1) wasted no time in putting away the Mountaineers scoring 28 unanswered points in the first quarter and going up 49-3  at the half.

Madison (2-6, 0-2) scored on a 35 yard Cameron Covington field goal late in the second quarter and got a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles used a combination of running and passing to combine for one of their best offensive performances this year.

Quarterback Colby Childs was 7 of 10 passing for 129 yards and 4 touchdowns. 3 to Baylor and 1 to Peyton Rutherford.

"We all came out and did what we had to do and got the win," Childs said. "Everybody got to play which is good for us."

Rutherford also scored twice on the ground and gained 175 yards on 14 carries. Rutherford has 1794 yards on 238 carries for an average of 7.5 yards per carry, has scored 26 touchdowns and 3 extra points. He also has 132 yards receiving on 9 catches with 2 touchdowns and an extra point for 176 total points scored.

The Eagles also got scores from Cole Lawson and touchdown run and a fumble recovery by Kyle Anderson.

Ben Sprouse was back in the line up after missing the Strasburg game due to injury, several other key Eagles are hopeful for return during the playoffs.

"It felt great, I missed it," Sprouse said. "It felt good to get out there and get a victory. Our guys played very well."

It was also a special night for Eagles head coach Chris Parker and he faced a former student and player on the other side of the field in Madison's new head coach Chandler Rhoads.

"He's [Rhoads] a special man, and tremendous athlete," Parker said. "He's got a lion's heart and I know it hurts him to lose. I'm sure he will get the program turned around."

The Eagles return home on Friday night to finish their 2017 regular season against Bull Run District opponent George Mason. It will be senior night. Kickoff at "the Felt" is 7:30PM

Redskins hold on against Niners

LANDOVER, Md.-  After jumping out to a 17-0 lead the Washington Redskins needed a defensive stand and an interception on 4th down by Kyle Fuller to hold off a fierce charge by San Francisco.

“We know the depth that we have in this secondary. Everybody can come out there, everybody can make plays and everybody is smart," Fuller said."That’s just how we have to do it as a group.”

Quarterback Kirk Cousins turned in another solid performance completing 25 of 37 passes for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns for a rating of 102.3. Cousins also threw one pick.

"I think we did a good job as an offense," Cousins said, "I think we moved the football. There were a lot of good decisisions, a lot of good plays made, a lot of third-down conversions in big moments, a lot of crucial drives where we had to churn the clock and come away with points."

The 49er's made a quarterback change from Brian Hoyer to C.J. Beathard and started moving the ball against the Redskins. San Francisco (0-6) got their first score just before the half and came out scoring 10 in the third quarter to get back in the game.

Washington (3-2) was held to 94 yards rushing, with Chris Thompson leading the way with 33 yards on 16 carries. Cousins added 26 on 4 carries including some crucial first down runs.

Thompson led all recievers with 105 yards on 4 receptions. Josh Doctson and Samage Perine each found the endzone once at the end of a Cousins touchdown pass.

The Redskins defense held the Niners to 85 yards rushing, and the two quarterbacks combined for 279 yards passing.

" You start to feel better about your team when you’re not as happy after a win as you normally should be, but you have to understand that this is a great competitive sport, the National Football League," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "You can see we’re starting to turn a corner a little bit when you’re not quite as ecstatic as you normally would be after a win. I think there are a lot of things we can correct, clean up obviously, but I’m impressed. Any time you get a victory on a Sunday afternoon at home, it’s special. I know we can play a lot better.”
